HONG KONG – July 26, 2021 – Hong Kong Disneyland Resort (HKDL) is contributing to a new meal box donation program – “Disney Meal Box Express” – by joining hands with Foodlink Foundation, a local charity dedicated to reducing hunger and food waste. The program aims to alleviate the impacts of the pandemic felt by many of the city’s underprivileged communities, with some even needing help to get basic food.

Through this new food donation initiative, HKDL is providing an estimated 6,000 healthy and freshly-cooked meal boxes across four Hong Kong districts from June to August. The donations, prepared at the resort by more than 200 Disney VoluntEARS and the Food & Beverage team, are sent every Thursday to various underprivileged families or to the elderly in need.

Michael Moriarty, managing director of Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, said the project is an opportunity for HKDL to share its resources with those in need: “HKDL has always been dedicated to giving back to the local community wherever possible,” Moriarty said.

“We learned from Foodlink, our long-standing community partner, that the pandemic has brought devastating changes to many families, with some even facing the challenge of feeding themselves. The meal boxes are able to provide assistance to these community families on a regular basis.”

Aurea Yung, head of operations at Foodlink, said: “The outbreak of COVID-19 has called for greater support for the most vulnerable and impoverished in our community. We are glad to have stepped up collaboration with Hong Kong Disneyland Resort and our community partners in donating food to help spread some love and cheer during this difficult period.”

HKDL’s Executive Chef (Hotel), Mak Kam-kui, has been working tirelessly with his team and the Disney VoluntEARS to bring the initiative to life. “We have so much talent among our Food & Beverage team,” he said. “This program allows the chefs to showcase their talents while at the same time doing their part for a good cause. They are able to contribute in their respective ways and take part in an initiative that we can all get behind together.”

The resort’s Disney VoluntEARS have put in many hours to make this operation a success. Tommy Mak, a VoluntEAR from the Technology and Digital team, said the program is very rewarding and fulfilling: “By contributing only an hour of my day and contributing to the meal box preparation, I know I’ve made a difference in someone else’s life,” he said.

Throughout the pandemic, HKDL’s community engagement strategy has remained innovative, agile and flexible in supporting local families and children in need. In the past fiscal year, the resort has doubled its surplus food donation program, and more than 205,000 meals have been given out since 2013.
