Disney Imaginations Hong Kong Design Competition 2025 Brings International Talent Together

Download DetailsHONG KONG, January 24, 2025 – Creativity took center stage once again as Hong Kong Disneyland Resort (HKDL) announced the winners of the Disney Imaginations Hong Kong Design Competition 2025 today. This year, the competition saw participants from international universities for the first time as part of the resort’s commitment in nurturing talent across boundaries, inviting global creative minds to apply.
The Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Miss Rosanna Law, who attended the competition’s award ceremony, said, “Disney Imaginations Hong Kong Design Competition is now one of the best-known youth creative competitions in Hong Kong, providing an amazing platform for youngsters with different geographical, education and professional backgrounds to showcase their technical, artistic and creative expertise.
The Government is aspired to encourage and support our younger generation to seize opportunities and to shine bright in the creative industries, bringing the integration of arts, culture, sports, creativity, tourism and entertainment in Hong Kong.”
Celebrating its 12th year as a platform for extraordinary talent and innovation, the competition attracted nearly 200 teams and over 640 participants, marking a new milestone as the resort received entries from students of renowned international universities, including the University of Toronto and Goldsmiths, University of London, in addition to participation from institutes in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. Eight teams were selected as finalists, with their presentations judged by a panel of executives and Imagineers from HKDL.
This year’s hypothetical challenge envisioned life in the year 2124, tasking participants with designing an engaging and educational experience to share Planet Earth’s solutions to different issues with a wider audience. The eight teams impressed judges with bold designs addressing topics such as the destruction of the ocean, air and water pollution and chaotic magnetic fields.
The winning team, E13, stood out with their visionary project that combined creativity with immersive storytelling. As champions, they received a cash prize, an exclusive trip to another Disney park, and a three-month hands-on work experience at Walt Disney Imagineering Hong Kong, providing an unparalleled opportunity to kickstart their creative journey.
“Storytelling has the power to connect us all,” said Michael Moriarty, Managing Director of HKDL. “This initiative provides young talent with a platform to express their creativity and learn from top industry professionals, and champions youth development. This year, for the first time, we had participants from international universities, pushing creativity to the next level.”
Many past winners have pursued careers as Disney Imagineers or theme park designers, underscoring the competition’s impact on shaping future creative visionaries. Ten alumni have gone on to become Disney Imagineers, contributing to various projects at HKDL, including the newly opened World of Frozen and Castle of Magical Dreams.
A legacy of nurturing talent
Created in 1991, Imaginations is a design competition created and sponsored by Walt Disney Imagineering in the United States. In 2011, HKDL became the first international site to bring the competition outside the United States. Titled the Disney Imaginations Hong Kong Design Competition, the program has expanded its reach to attract more talent, with participants from selected institutions combining their technical, artistic, and creative skills to propose hypothetical concepts for an immersive experience, showcasing their ability to combine innovative and diverse ideas with a passion for Disney. The competition is also part of Disney Future Storytellers, an initiative dedicated to inspiring the next generation of storytellers and innovators.
