Of this, over HK$2.5 million is dedicated to transforming areas of local public hospitals into more magical and comforting spaces for child patients by phase. More than HK$2.5 million will also go toward supporting youth development initiatives.
To mark the launch of this meaningful hospital-focused initiative, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Disney VoluntEARS brought the “PlayWell with Disney 20th Anniversary Magical Party” to Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) today, bringing joy to around 100 young patients, their families and medical staff, while celebrating HKDL’s milestone anniversary.
Delivering Joy and Comfort When It’s Needed Most
Extending HKDL’s long-standing community initiatives for children in hospitals, eight public hospitals, including the Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine Specialist Out-patient Clinic at TMH and one Paediatrics Ward’s Activity Room at The Duchess of Kent Children’s Hospital at Sandy Bay, are being enhanced through the installation of tailored Disney-themed murals and Disney’s Mobile Movie Theatre with free Disney+ access.
This latest effort creates more uplifting, imaginative, and comforting spaces for children receiving care, making hospital stays more pleasant for young patients.
TMH is a pioneer site to be transformed with the installation of the mural and theater in early July. Today, young patients happily joined the “PlayWell with Disney 20th Anniversary Magical Party” in this newly-reimagined space.
An Yu, aged 12, has been suffering from anemia since childhood. As she saw the brand-new hospital environment for the first time, she expressed her excitement: ‘I visited the hospital every few months for follow-up since I was a child. I used to be nervous while waiting. The refurbished waiting area is now totally different. The whole place is so colorful with murals of many Disney characters. It made me so happy and relaxed. Now I know every time I come back for follow-up, I can meet all the Disney characters, especially my favorite Mickey and Minnie. It's just like Disneyland!”
The First 20th Anniversary Magical Party Hosted for Child Patients
Beloved party host Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse made a surprise appearance, bringing a touch of Disney magic to the children in the transformed space. Performers from HKDL’s Entertainment team and Disney VoluntEARS were also there to extend the resort’s 20th anniversary spirit outside of HKDL. The celebration featured colorful decor, mini-game booths, singing, and dancing, creating an unforgettable experience full of party vibes for the children in the hospital.
Henry Fan, Chairman of the Hospital Authority (HA); Dr Tony Ko, Chief Executive of HA; Dr Wong Yiu-chung, Cluster Chief Executive of New Territories West and Hospital Chief Executive of TMH joined the event as guests of honor.
Fan expressed appreciation for the Disney magic the child patients experienced. “I believe children who come for follow-up consultations, as well as the families who accompany them, will be provided with an enhanced waiting experience with the new child-friendly atmosphere. We would like to thank Hong Kong Disneyland for their support and donation for letting our patient-centric initiatives come true.” he said.
“This year, in celebration of Hong Kong Disneyland’s 20th anniversary, we are deepening our commitment to the community by earmarking over HK$2.5 million of donation to elevate the in-hospital experience for child patients across eight local hospitals over several phases,” said Michael Moriarty, Managing Director of Hong Kong Disneyland Resort. “This marks a meaningful new chapter in our journey—growing our legacy of care, bringing comfort to young patients, and creating moments of happiness where they’re needed most.”
In addition to the “PlayWell with Disney” hospital initiative, HKDL is donating 200,000 theme park tickets through the “Gift of Happiness: Hong Kong Disneyland 20th Anniversary Magical Ticket Donation” program. The initiative has received over 500 applications from local non-profit organizations, sharing the magic and joy of HKDL with underserved families and individuals.
These initiatives by HKDL are part of The Walt Disney Company’s work to deliver moments of happiness and comfort to seriously ill children around the world, including a recently fulfilled US$100 million commitment that has supported 1,500 children’s hospitals and pediatric places of care in 45 countries and regions.
20 years of HKDL’s Impact on the Community
Over the past 19 years, HKDL’s Disney VoluntEARS have contributed nearly 123,000 hours to supporting the local community, through initiatives such as wish granting, the “Dress Well” project at Hong Kong Children’s Hospital, “PlayWell with Disney” hospital initiative at various hospitals, and a real-life social adaptation training program for children with special educational needs. The resort also helps inspire and empower today’s youth to imagine their possibilities, dreams about their future, and build their talents and skills.
Meanwhile, the resort is incredibly proud of the impact it has made on Hong Kong’s economy and tourism. In FY24, HKDL alone brought about HK$12.4 billion of added value to Hong Kong, and created approximately 22,000 jobs (in terms of man-years), contributing toward Hong Kong’s overall growth.
With a solid foundation built over two decades, the resort looks forward to delivering happiness, inspiring optimism, and creating opportunities as it steps into a future full of possibilities.
